UN, US, others ask Jonathan to arrest terrorists

THE United Nations, Unite States of America and others in their message to Nigeria as the nation marks its 53rd Independence anniversary have asked President Goodluck Jonathan to arrest violent elements in the country, especially members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, Empowered Newswire reports. The US asked the Nigerian government “to find and bring those responsible for this deplorable violence to justice.” The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, also in a statement from the UN Secretariat late on Monday, called for the “the perpetrators to be swiftly brought to justice.” The Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans similarly wondered how easy it had become for the terrorists to do damage and “simply vanish into thin air even at a time of emergency rule.” In a statement from the United States Government, released on Monday night US time, the Americans said, “As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 53rd year of independence, the United States stands with all Nigerians to reject the heinous violence that continues to be perpetrated by Boko Haram and other extremist groups. These attacks on innocent civilians have no place in a democratic society.” “Following last week’s heinous attack in Benisheikh, where more than 160 people were shot and slaughtered, this weekend’s attacks in Yobe State took the lives of more than fifty innocent students and civilians. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in these senseless acts of violence.” While commiserating with the Nigerian government and the victims’ families, the US government declared, “We encourage the Government of Nigeria to work together with the families of the victims and affected communities to find and bring those responsible for this deplorable violence to justice, and to enhance the protection of civilians to ensure respect for the rule of law.” The UN statement from its secretariat in New York said, “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the murder of more than 40 students and the wounding of several others by gunmen at the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State, northeastern Nigeria. “The Secretary-General calls for the perpetrators to be swiftly brought to justice and for increasing efforts to be taken to prevent similar attacks and ensure adequate protection of civilians.”

Meet Wole Soyinka, 2013 Lifetime Achievement Winner

We’ll be spending this week exploring the lives and works of the 2013 Anisfield-Wolf Award winners. Today we’re recognizing Wole Soyinka, this year’s Lifetime Achievement winner. The greatest threat to freedom is the absence of criticism. ~Wole Soyinka A playwright/poet/essayist, Soyinka is one of Nigeria’s most beloved figures. Repeatedly, he has risked his life to protest the corrupt governmental regimes. In 1967, he was arrested and put in solitary confinement for 22 months for his attempts at brokering a peace between the warring Nigerian and Biafran parties warmongering in his homeland. He kept writing during this time, creating ink in his cell and using scraps of paper to collect his poetry. Wole Soyinka’s Ake: The Years of Childhood won an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award in 1983. Three years later, he went on to become the first African to win a Nobel Prize for Literature. At 78, he splits his time between the United States, where he teaches at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and his home outside of Lagos in Nigeria. He narrates the introduction of the new documentary, “Fuelling Poverty,” which protests the Nigerian government’s oil subsidy scandal of 2011. “[Nigeria] is one of the poorest and most corrupt nations in the world,” he says in the introduction. “This film, made by the younger generation, is about the oil subsidy scheme. It is about a culture of greed and corruption and its effects on the people. But it is also about a people of great resilience, of people who are finding their voice, who care deeply about their country and dare to ask for a better world for themselves.” Soyinka is acutely attuned to global perceptions of Nigeria. He criticized “Welcome to Lagos,” a 2010 three-part documentary made by the BBC, for being colonialist and exploitative. He told the Guardian newspaper, “There was no sense of Lagos as what it is – a modern African state. What we had was jaundiced and extremely patronizing. It was saying, ‘Oh, look at these people who can make a living from the pit of degradation.’” Soyinka added: ”It is a pulsing city – in many ways too pulsing for me, which is why I live a little way out of it. But it is such a rich city, and it is deeply frustrating to see it given such a negative and reductionist overview.”

happy independence Day Nigeria.....NIGERIA @53

Let every patriot be honored; Don't let politics get in the way. Without them, freedom would have died; What they did, we can't repay.

Rihanna’s long-awaited “Pour It Up” video has never been released, but the singer took to Instagram Saturday to titillate and tease with some never-before-seen photos from the shoot. In a series of pics, the performer flaunts her nipples and butt cheeks in two different provocative outfits, seemingly a nod to the track’s strip club theme.

Jesse Jags

At ‘The Jesse Jagz Experience’ free music concert which held last month at the New Afrika Shrine, Lagos, the music maker took time to explain his weed smoking habit and how it doesn’t concern anybody. ‘This one’s for the blogs. You people keep reporting about me smoking marijuana, chastising me for smoking is just another form of racism’, Jesse Jagz blurted out in between performance. He then went on a rant about how he did not ‘find it anyone’s business’ because he patronised the green leaf calling it ‘grass’ created by God himself. It was once reported about Jesse Jagz use of Marijuana but record label Chocolate City denied it. Well, we guess Jesse’s open statement has proved his former label wrong… <- Thanks for reading please Follow us ;)
